Spaceflight began in the 20th century following theoretical and practical breakthroughs by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and Robert H. Goddard. The Soviet Union took the lead in the post-war Space Race, launching the first satellite, the first man and the first woman into orbit. The United States caught up with, and then passed, their Soviet rivals during the mid-1960s, landing the first man on the Moon in 1969.

Learned a ton about the history of the space program. And the pictures are outstanding.

In more than 800 photographs organized on two-page spreads, the album introduces theoreticians of space technology such as Konstantin Tsiolkovskii; explains the evolving technology with arrowed diagrams of rockets, capsules, and space suits; dramatizes landmark space missions from Sputnik to China's recent launches of taikonauts; and reproduces images of space-age paraphernalia, such as postal stamps and mission patches. Learned a ton about the history of the space program.

Gagarin’s flight was the shortest manned mission in space history, lasting just 108 minutes from takeoff to touchdown. After the flight, Gagarin achieved celebrity status and toured the world extensively to promote the Soviet space program. The mission wasn’t without its drama. As Leonov recounted in a book about his experience, his pressurized suit became bloated during the 10-minute float in zero gravity, making it impossible for him to reenter the capsule.

The mission duration of Vostok I was one hour and 48 minutes, managed to separate Yuri Gagarin from spacecraft at right position on space. Top 6 successful manned Moon landings in the history.

Can't remember this book. No doubt gave it as a gift. Assume it was in good shape and arrived on time

One of the better summaries on spaceflight that I have come across. Each subject is divided into two page spreads which gives the basic outline of a mission or subject and then gives a 'What if' scenario which goes somewhat beyond the standard descriptions and explores what might have happened if history had turned out differently. Very insightful. Good photos and artwork. Just a couple of criticisms. In the First Steps in Space section they cover all the manned missions of the era but for some mysterious reason have missed out the Gemini 3-7 missions, surely an important period with the first rendesvous, long duration mission and American EVA occuring. Also in the Mars and Venus section they have given a whole two page spread to the failed Beagle 2 mission which was quite adequately covered in the Mars Express section.
I look foward to seeing future editions of this book covering the recent Mars probes.
