A traction engine is a self-propelled steam engine used to move heavy loads on roads, plough ground or to provide power at a chosen location. Who would have thought that old smoke-belching workhorse machines could be a thing of beauty. Yet, there is something strangely beautiful about these old machines, and the photos and text in this book capture this nicely, both at work and at shows.

These mighty machines formed the backbone of rural America; featured in this book are machines built by Advance-Rumley and Gaar Scott, Avery, Buffalo-Pitts, J.I. Case, Hart-Parr, International, Minneapolis Threshing, and Pioneer, along with a few other manufacturers. Most of these machines run on steam, but several examples that run on kerosene are also included. The second chapter highlights special components, both mechanical and structural, while the third and fourth chapters chronicle the specific duties for which these tractors and engines are used and the special equipment they drive. The final chapter is on special shows, often showing these mighty machines dueling one another.

This book is a fine tribute to the machines that "helped tame the Midwest."

I am a fan of steam engines, especially the Traction engines. This book has many colour pictures and history about so many different kinds. I use the pictures for help in my modeling, I like building them in 1/87th scale (HO scale) and the contents here are superb for many of my needs. I also found out that the original engines were pulled by horses, they didn't run on their own steam, but later they were, yet still needed to be steered by a team of horses; an interesting bit of history that I had not known otherwise. Many had a 'tractor' seat up front on the boiler to control the horses. If you like the history of these, or want to use them for modeling ideas etc, you won't be disappointed. It's a great book.
