I love to hear that music Play it slow or fast I love that healing message From the distant past. I hear dissenting voices Quick to disagree But I'm on a music mission They don't bother me I sing the songs that set men free. And if you rearrange it It remains the same I change the way I say it But never what I say, yeah The message must remain the same. Don't stop, don't stop the music You got to let it play Don't stop, don't stop the music Play it in your own way Don't stop, don't stop the music You got to let it play Don't stop, don't stop the music Play it in your own way.

I hadn't heard much DeGarmo & Key music back in the day - I was more into Petra. But a friend recently loaned me some of his D&K CDs and in the process of researching the group I discovered that Dana Key had written a book about his group's involvement in the Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) scene. Having spent time in a praise band and going through the worship wars I was interested in what he had to say. While the book was largely autobiographical and did a good job of justifying D&K's particular style of Christian Rock, it didn't gloss over the fact that not all rock music is good for the soul. Key made it clear that the music was just a vehicle for the lyrics they wrote and that the message was the most important. Their concerts were not just about the music either as they always gave a presentation of the gospel and what would pass for an alter call in a traditional church service.

Key did not make excuses for all rock music and pointed out that the lifestyle of the artists had a lot to do with whether or not their music was healthy to listen to. He talked about the dangers of making heroes and idols of rock stars, sharing his own early experience with his worship of Jimi Hendrix. This book gave me a different perspective on the CCM music scene and while I am not ready to rejoin a praise and worship band, I'm not nearly as jaded as I was before reading this book. I applaud the courage D&K showed in the face of some very harsh criticism as they helped pioneer the Christian rock genre. Sadly, Dana Key passed away from a ruptured blood clot in 2010 at the age of 56.

Dana Key, guitarist and vocalist for Degarmo and Key, was one of the founders of what eventually became the contemporary Christian music industry. I had the privilege of seeing D&K perform live in Tulsa in 1981, and their show was terrific.

'Don't Stop the Music' was published in 1989, and its message is still relevant today. Parents of teens and pre-teens who have kids into 'death metal' music and other satanic musical genres may be able to use this well-written book to help steer their kids toward a more healthy, sane and godly form of musical inspiration and entertainment.

Dana Key passed away earlier this year, but his music will live forever in the hearts of D&K fans - past, present and future.

It always amazes me that the so called politically correct folks tried to kill the Christian music movement. Degarmo & Key were the first to pave the way for all CC music , Thank You .
