MIRA LYN KELLY grew up in the Chicago area and earned her degree in fine arts from Loyola University. She met the love of her life while studying abroad in Rome, Italy, only to discover he’d been living right around the corner from her for the previous two years. Having spent her twenties working and playing in the Windy City, she’s now settled with her husband in rural Minnesota, where their four beautiful children provide an excess of action, adventure and entertainment.

Never Stay Past Midnight book. They started me on the road to reading romance, way back when. Mira Lyn Kelly's "Never Stay Past Midnight" has to be one of (if not THE) most perfect Harlequins I have ever read. Two people, each at a point in their lives where they are neither I read a lot of Harlequin books. Romance, Presents, Superromance, Historical, Blaze.

Elise is an independent, strong-willed, sweet, funny, family oriented woman who is ready to launch her own studio (pilates/yoga/etc).
Levi (yes, he is as hunky as his name) is sex on a stick, broken past, super-hunky guy that opens clubs for a business (he launches, then sells them for profit).
Their worlds are pretty different, but the book starts in the first chapter with them in bed - a one-night stand.
She decides to throw caution to the wind for one night and the result is a hot night in bed that neither of them can forget.

So the book is about them meeting again and the navigation of being in an agreed upon temporary relationship without falling in love.
There are other characters in the book that cause them to be thrown together (in a good way). Elise and Levi begin to turn towards each other for support and find that the attraction to each other goes beyond the physical (although it is pretty hot in that arena).

There are no big plot twists, no bad villain chasing them, etc. It's a simple love story.
Took me only a couple hours to read - very quick and easy; but better than most fluffy Harlequin novels.

The book has a very happy ending (LOVED the epilogue - shows a super playful side of Levi. Makes you see that he truly gets his HEA).
No cliffhanger (thanks so much!)
No super angst.
Neither character makes a huge stupid mistake that they have to spend chapters begging the other to forgive.
No deep emotional turmoil. Although both Elise and Levi are dealing with their respective problems, the book does a fairly cursory show of these issues and do not delve into them into great amount of time. The author does a good enough job making us understand -without making us relive it with them.

This is not your typical super fluffy book, although after I finished, it didn't 'stay' with me. But I enjoyed reading it. I didn't find myself rolling my eyes at any plot issues, there were a few typos, but it typically doesn't bother me a lot. But the characters had more depth, dialogue was good and the plot was better than many of these types of novels. They both seemed to be pretty mature about the relationship. This is a book I will re-read in the future.

Sarah Wendell recommended this during one of her podcasts. This book is not for me, but I can see the draw for some. I’m always hesitant to read Harlequin. They hire authors to churn out books at a fast pace and limit pages per book. It stifles creativity - in my opinion. I’d rather read authors who are not required to write multiple books per year. This was ok, but it was easy to put down. And I did not feel eager to get back to it. The characters and plot were things that most of us like - which is the Harlequin style.

I was confused at the end. It was too quick and not enough details. There’s a jump in time. New characters were added and I thought “who’s that, what’s going on?”

Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 181 pages. Swearing language: mild. Sexual language: none. Number of sex scenes: 4. Setting: current day Chicago, Illinois. Copyright: 2012. Genre: contemporary romance.
I managed to grab this when it was free, but I fully believe it is worth paying for.

From the very beginning, I loved the interactions between Levi & Elise. Their characters were really fleshed out, and I thought the plot went at the right pace.

The summary doesn't actually match the plot - Elise gets up and TRIES to leave, but Levi isn't the kind of hero to let a pretty girl walk home at midnight in Chicago. They have an...interesting drive over, and eventually meet up again by accident. (Interactions. This book is all about hilarious interactions.) They decide to date while Levi is waiting for his latest club to really get on its feet, with the understanding that the commitment is only temporary. While Elise recognizes the danger that her emotions are in, Levi has some personal demons and is determined to keep his life safely on track.

Their personalities and the plot were endearing and real, and I've read this book multiple times just for the smiles. Absolutely worth every star.
This was cute. As soon as he had her, he did not want to give her up. He wanted one night, then he wanted a few nights, then he wanted her until the time he left, then he wanted her to come with him for a few months, then he wanted her forever. He just plain wanted her and showed it very well!! I did feel bad about the situation where she thought she was pregnant and he basically told her "have fun raising it without me". He did not say it like that but the way he did was insensitive! I did understand a bit why he did not want a child and I do not think he would have stayed away for long if she was. He would have been back WAY before the child had been born. I do ABSOLUTELY love the epilogue. It MORE THAN makes up for that pregnancy scare scene. He was great in it. I adored the heroine and the hero very much and they were a great pair.
I really enjoyed reading this book and getting to know Elise. She was a breath of fresh air and very relatable. There were definitely laugh out loud moments from the very beginning and once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. I look forward to reading more work from this author.
