For years, police focused on the means of policing rather than its ends, according to Goldstein. Goldstein (1979) called to replace what he termed the reactive, incident-driven standard model of policing.

This perfect balance of the concepts and practical applications of community-oriented policing uses updated research and real case studies to detail and describe various police programs that have been implemented, their success or failure, and discusses the current issues surrounding these programs. Following a thorough discussion of the evolution of community-oriented policing, this book covers neighborhood-oriented policing, problem-oriented policing, integration, organization and management, the role of the police, the role of the community, the role of the chief, community-oriented policing implementation, the federal government's role, and the future of community-oriented policing. An excellent resource for those involved in police-community relations and in the criminal justice system.

Community-Oriented Policing: A Systemic Approach to Policing (4th Edition). I bought this as a required text for a recent police promotional exam. AWFUL! I am certain the author did not generate an original thought throughout the entire text. Rather, it is a regurgitation of other works in the field of study. The information is so dated, it has become irrelevant. The most recent edition includes few updates and the ones that are included are a waste of time. Sincerely, as a 15-year-veteran police officer with a masters degree it is my opinion that unless you are required to read this text as I was, you should not waste your time.

I realize this is a used book/rental but it is in terrible condition. Pages literally falling out of it. Came all taped up. Based on guidelines I have read I would not think this book meets the standards as listed.

An excellent text for LEO's and anyone interested in this newer approach to police work. Every community leader needs to get a copy and read it to obtain a better understand the future of policing.

Professor seldom used the book because it is very outdated and a boring read. Wouldn't buy it if it's not required for your course work.

Very good. Needs upgrading
I have used this book as a textbook for the course Community Oriented Policing. I have found it very useful for the students who are being introduced to the Criminal Justice System, as well as being written at a level which they can understand. As the instructor, I am able to take this material as a foundation, then build on it as you would expect of a thirty-six year veteran of policing and a college level instructor. As in any bachelor level class, the instructor must give more than just the text, or there is no reason to attend class.
