This is because gospel harmony is fundamentally vocal, and the standard for most gospel choirs is three parts (soprano, alto, tenor) with bass notes either sung as a fourth part or, more commonly today, played instrumentally (by piano or bass). You will find that each part of the three-part harmony outlined in these examples is always easily sung and remembered.

I have spent abut 4 hours in this book. I love it. It was just what I was looking for. I will spend a year studying and practicing the valuable lessons in this book, and I believe it will open the secrets of this beautiful style of music that I love so much. Thanks Kurt for this excellent book on gospel music.
This book would be my very first strong recommendation to anyone who is interested in learning more about this musical style.

This book will teach you what you need to know to be a better gospel player. One important note, this is not for a brand new piano student - the book assumes some background knowledge of music theory. If you've been playing for a few years, you'll probably be fine. Good book

Just what I was hoping for. With diligent practice, this should have my playing up-to-snuff within a few months. I'd recommend for the advanced beginner to intermediate player. It will supplement other technique books. Satisfied with my purchase.

This book was a lot harder than I expected, would have been nice if I could have been able to view some of the inside pages before I bought it.

I've just finished listening to the included CD, while following along with the written text. The recorded examples are the best I've ever heard on a Keyboard Styles CD. The author states in the intro that the book is intended for the advanced player with good sight reading skills. I play by ear. So it is great to have these exciting musical phrases transcribed. The examples have lots of chord changes per measure played against highly syncopated left hand bass lines, mostly three notes in the right hand with the bass note completing the full chord voicing. I agree with the one reviewer who said the examples were not Ray Charles sounding. The sound is more pop oriented. And there is a boat load of theory crammed into this book, like when to use diminished chords, chord couplings and such. I play mostly blues, so the changes presented in this book are brand new for me. I don't expect to be able to play the examples note for note, but the book presents a whole new palette of musical ideas that will enhance my personal style. I'm really excited about getting into it. I may even go to church!
Flamehammer
Terrific book overall.
But suggested fingerings and dynamic markings would be really useful.

You will need to already have a strong understanding of music theory and harmony to get the most out of this book.
Shistus
Really like the arrangements. Didn't get a fifth star because it's a bit advanced for me. I'm going to keep working on it.
As a working full time Church Musician. I do recommend this

Above the mere harmonic treatment and devices. it is the rhythm that helps distill the gospel sound.
another reviewer mentioned that the devices in this book. are not the pad work. that you hear in contemporary worship
however this lays a foundation for many of the songs and styles with which you will be presented.

think Wow gospel 1998-2015 disc 2
if you are familiar with wow gospel you will know what I mean
in fact some of the examples in the book are on the disc two wow series.

I have worked out of this book and I have to say it is still a work in progress
dont be discouraged keep plugging away. the type of harmony is different then jazz harmony
in that gospel harmony moves. linearly
to go further with this idea you may want to look at Barry Harris.
whose ideas are along similar lines.
