The combination of the writing talents of Nick Tosches with rock n' roll is a treat. Tosches goes beyond Elvis that is almost myth-like. Essential book on the roots of rock - and basically beyond.

Nick Tosches makes his musicological bias clear from the get-go: ''Rock 'n' roll is dead,'' he says, perfectly symbolized b. But there was a golden time in the ’40s and ’50s when, for Tosches, rock & roll hadn’t congealed into pop. Unsung Heroes, first published in 1984 in a shorter version, offers a portrait gallery of some untamed musical pioneers, mostly R&B or rockabilly performers who thought a little too far wasn’t nearly far enough. None of Tosches’ heroes represent the pure woolliness of that time as well as Ming and Ling.

This may be, quite simply, the best non-fiction book on music. I agree with his main point - in rock and roll, there is nothing new under the sun; everything truly innovative was done by someone over half a century ago (and there's a good chance they were drunk at the time). The Merman chapter alone is worth the price of admission, opening new avenues of appreciation.

wasn’t only a free market, it was blind. They didn’t know what they were selling or to whom. Tosches went even further. The joy of books such as Country, The Unsung Heroes of Rock’n’Roll and, especially, Hellfire, the 1982 biography of Jerry Lee Lewis that was subsequently called the greatest music book of all time by both Rolling Stone and the Guardian, was Tosches’ ability to marry the two-fisted vitality of his best early 70s writing with things that he once. would have scoffed at.

An excellent trip through rock and roll history focusing on the largely-forgotten performers and songwriters who paved the way for other, more well-known musicians--all written by the dark master, Nick Tosches.

Total crap. Mr. Tosches relied on lies and rumors with most of this work. Don't waste your money on this!
