Born in Suffolk, he is known principally for his landscape paintings of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home – now known as "Constable Country" – which he invested with an intensity of affection. I should paint my own places best", he wrote to his friend John Fisher in 1821, "painting is but another word for feeling".

Today, John Constable (1776-1837) is remembered as among England’s greatest painters. You can see it the National Gallery of Art in Washington, . But in his lifetime, he had little success in his home country. A revolutionary painter, he disregarded the hierarchy of genres that relegated landscapes beneath genre and historical painting and aimed at a truthful rather than idealized vision of nature. John Constable was born in East Bergholt, a village on the River Stour in Suffolk, to Golding and Ann Constable. He also painted occasional religious pictures, but according to John Walker, "Constable's incapacity as a religious painter cannot be overstated. His father was a wealthy corn merchant, owner of Flatford Mill and, later, Dedham Mill. Although Constable was his parents' second son, his older brother was mentally handicapped and so John was expected to succeed his father in the business. Constable adopted a routine of spending the winter in London and painting at East Bergholt in the summer.
