This review is for the set of 6 DVDs of "Sol y viento." "Sol y viento" was made to go with a textbook but you don't need the textbook to enjoy the movie. Verb forms used include: present, preterite, subjunctive, and commands.

There are 9 episodes. Each episode has two sections, A and B. There are preview exercises, like a review of the previous episode, then the actual program part. After that there's a "Lo captaste" part to check comprehension. Some of the activities are matching a photo with words or what happened. Other activities are a True/False. There's also a "Lengua en contexto" part on the grammar. There's also a what do you remember part. The actual movie part lasts about 14 minutes. The other activities last about 15 minutes each episode.

The actors use clear Spanish for the most part. They also speak at a reasonable rate. There didn't seem to be much Chilean slang and no use of vos. The beginning episode and one other have a bit of English spoken. As for culture covered, the mapuches are the primary focus.

The main character is Jaime. Jaime is from the US looking to buy the vineyard so his company can build a dam. He meets Mario, his driver in the airport. Dona Isabel is the owner of the vineyard with her daughter Maria Teresa, and son, Carlos. Carlos wishes to sell the vineyard but the women do not. Don Paco shows up to help with the situation.

There are very few cautions to mention before showing the movie to a Spanish class. Obviously, since it takes place in a vineyard the characters drink wine. Maria Teresa and Jaime kiss. There's no bad language, drugs, violence, or sex.

One of the promos for the film calls it "romantic." It's not a romantic date night movie if you are looking for a chick flick. The movie is interesting and enjoyable but not a watch over and over again romantic type film. Well done though for a add-on to a textbook.

This Chile-oriented supplement to Destinos, a much longer instructional program, has a "logistical" problem that I suspect may be a problem for other users. Specifically, McGraw-Hill shipped the 6-disc set in a cardboard folder that caused the lower disc edge to stick to glue used to construct the folder -- this, in turn, caused serious play-back problems, mainly hanging up/complete stoppage of playback. When this happened I didn't realize the cause of the problem and tried cleaning the discs with a "rotating" cleaning system, which only smeared glue more. When I realized that glue was the problem, I used finger nail remover in effort to clean the discs -- causing even more problems. I ended up purchasing another set on ebay (unused, still in shrink wrap) and was careful to check for glue sticking to the edges of discs. I used "Goo Gone" to clean off the glue and the discs worked properly.

Excellent acting.

Great subtitles and enunciation of the phoenetics. Yet, this movie is intended to support the book, sol y viento. If you take the class based on the book and this movie.... I hope you have an extra-ordinary instructor. The publishers spent most of their budget on this movie. With the $500 they had left over they decided to throw together a book.

A good movie. I'd recommend to support your spanish learning that is not affiliated with the HORRIBLY WRITTEN sol y viento book.
