Zechariah is not studied nearly often enough because it is HARD. Don't let that deter you. Many or most of the prophecies of Zechariah are still future to our time and need to be understood.

The Book of Zechariah, attributed to the Hebrew prophet Zechariah, is included in the Twelve Minor Prophets in the Hebrew Bible. Zechariah's prophecies took place during the reign of Darius the Great, and were contemporary with Haggai in a post-exilic world after the fall of Jerusalem in 587/6 BC. Ezekiel and Jeremiah wrote before the fall of Jerusalem, while continuing to prophesy in the early exile period

The book of Zechariah contains the clearest and the largest number of messianic (about the Messiah) passages among the Minor Prophets. In that respect, it’s possible to think of the book of Zechariah as a kind of miniature book of Isaiah. Zechariah pictures Christ in both His first coming (Zechariah 9:9) and His second coming (9:10–10:12). Jesus will come, according to Zechariah, as Savior, Judge, and ultimately, as the righteous King ruling His people from Jerusalem (14:8–9).

Starting in chapter 9, the book changes as Zechariah focuses more intently on God’s final redemption of His people Israel.

2 The text does not provide dates for the prophecies of the last five chapters of the book. Starting in chapter 9, the book changes as Zechariah focuses more intently on God’s final redemption of His people Israel. The coming Priest-King will judge the enemies of God’s people and care for God’s people.

What a pity that Zechariah is not studied more! It is a thrilling prophetic book--essential for comprehending much about the end-times and important if you want to fully understand many symbols and allusions found in the book of Revelation. Zechariah is not studied nearly often enough because it is HARD. Don't let that deter you. Many or most of the prophecies of Zechariah are still future to our time and need to be understood.

In addition to a good translation of the Bible, the two best books you will need to understand Zechariah are this one by Merrill Unger and Zechariah by David Baron. Get them both. I am delighted that they are back in print. They are not easy--most things that are really worth while take effort. Own these books and take lots of time to study and absorb the meat they contain. They are not intended to be a quick read. Both Unger and Baron are scholarly, premillennial, and careful exegetes of the Word.

I studied this book in depth as part of a course on the Post Exilic Prophets. Dr Unger provides extremely detailed verse by verse exegesis in a literal, pre-trib, pre-millenial vein. He focuses down on the text at a word by word level delving into the original Hebrew from time to time. It is by far the best book I have seen on Zechariah which is an excellent and understudied biblical book - especially from an escatalogic perspective.

So why not five stars? I am not convinced that this book is accessible to the casual or even semi-serious reader. Whilst he delves into the Hebrew a little less that Keil his use of the English language very accurately displays the doctors almost overwhelming erudition. I tend to enjoy books that use a wide vocabulary; this one however sent me to the dictionary two or three times a page.

I think the bottom line is that if you are serious about studying Zechariah and are prepared to do the work of reading this book then it is an excellent resource. A quick bit of light reading for lunchtime it is not (and not even close).

Classic commentary on Zechariah
Mamuro
I highly recommend this commentary. Well written, succintly helpful while bringing forth the linguistic and contextual meaning. One of the best commentaries I have read in years. Hoping to find more similar work of his for expository study.
A great deal !!!
