Poems on the Underground e-book

by Gerard Benson,Judith Chernaik,Cicely Herbert

Judith Chernaik, Cicely Herbert, Imtiaz Dharker, and George .

Judith Chernaik, Cicely Herbert, Imtiaz Dharker, and George Szertes now select poems for inclusion in the programme. The first book containing all the featured poems was not published until much later, having been initially rejected by Faber as unlikely to prove commercially viable.

Judith Chernaik, a New Yorker by birth and Londoner by adoption, founded Poems on the Underground with two poet friends 25 years ago. Judith has written four novels and a study of Shelley's poetry. Gerard John Benson was an English Quaker poet, teacher, and author. He was named poet laureate of the City of Bradford (2008) and was also active with Poems on the Underground. Benson had worked as an intelligence decoder in Britain and as an actor, but his vocation was poetry

Poems on the Underground. What’s great is the choice of poems: a mix of the classics, William Blake and Dante, with many modern poems.

Poems on the Underground. It also brings in the art of the typographer. That combination of visual art and poetry works wonderfully well.

Summary: The now familiar poem posters first appeared in London's tube and underground trains in 1986. The idea was simple enough: why not convert the empty advertising space above the passenger's heads into a simple celebration of the poetry that has underscored English literature for a thousand years or more? The poems soon caught the public's imagination.

Over the years, the much imitated initiative has saved tens of thousands of frazzled travellers from seething fury. There’s nothing like a fragment of Sappho, John Donne, Philip Larkin, Derek Walcott or Louis MacNeice to remind you that the world is crazier and more of it than we think, Incorrigibly plural. 10. Hook, Line and Singer, by Cerys Matthews I love the way Matthews weaves poetry into everything she does.

I thought this book would be written by and about experiences commuting on The Tube!!! It's not! It is a collection of classic poetry written by pretty famous poets like Keats, Wordsworth, etc. I was hoping for something a little more urban and gritty. Oh well, I love the classics, too. But I own several anthologies already.

This was given to me when it was first published. It remains my favourite anthology of poetry ever. I would happily recommend it to anyone who is interested in a broad survey of English poetry. My fave is "English Teeth" by Spike Milligan.
