Robert John Welch (22 July 1859 – 28 September 1936) was an Irish photographer interested in natural history, particularly mollusca. Welch, born in Strabane, County Tyrone, was the son of an accomplished Scottish amateur photographer. He specialised in outdoors photography and took thousands of photographs of the towns and scenery of Ireland. He was a skilled craftsman and his studies of Ireland and Irish life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries are today justly famous

A permanent exhibition at the Ulster Museum features twenty enlarged photographs of his works on the subject of travel.

Robert Welch was born in Strabane on 22 July 1858 and lived for a time in Enniskillen. 1977 Ireland’s eye: The photographs of Robert John Welch (Ulster Museum series ; no. 201), Belfast: Blackstaff Press ISBN: 978-0856400797. Queen’s University, Belfast (1912). He developed an early interest in photography from his father who operated as a professional photographer from 1863 until his untimely death in 1875. In that year he went to Belfast to train as a professional photographer under E. T. Church. He established his own business in 1883 in Lonsdale Street.
