Faber Birren, e. The Color Pr imer: A Basic Trea-. The combinatorial thinking of the chemist and Nobel laureate Wilhelm Ostwald grew out of his activities in chemistry and was further developed in his philosophy of nature. Ostwald used combinatorics as an analogous, creative, and interdisciplinary way of thinking in areas like knowledge organization and in his theory of colors and forms. His work marginally influenced art movements like the German Werkbund, the Dutch De Stijl, and the Bauhaus.

In 1909, Wilhelm Ostwald (1853-1932) - who came from the Baltic - received the Nobel prize for chemistry for his work on catalysis, an area on the fringe of physics, which promised applications in industry. Ostwald, who had been instrumental in the foundation of the first Zeitschrift für Physicalische Chemie, was also something of a pioneer outside his own immediate field: in addition to the history of his special subject, he showed great interest in the physical sciences as a whole, as is evident in Ostwalds Klassiker der exakten Naturwissenschaften.

Ostwald describes his color system in this book. Was hard for me to grasp at first, as my first lessons on color used the RYB Artist's system which included three primary colors. In Ostwald's system, there are four basic colors (red, green, blue and yellow) which the system expands from. I just realized that these are also the four colors of cone opposition processing - which makes more sense. Very interesting how Ostwald built his 3D color solid, and how his notation system works. As Ostwald describes his color system in this book.
