While i was reading this book the FIRST time? I realized quickly that the author did A LOT of research. My boyfriend grew up in New York - and vaguely heard of the "Bridge of Sighs", The Tombs, etc. They actually existed. So cool!

He wrote in a way that made the reader not only interested in the characters - but actually quite comfortable with them. I was rooting for Lena Shanks, throughout this page turner.

Maggie Kizer was portrayed in my opinion as the coolest, classiest octoroon on earth.

The children were amazing proteges, and the Sapphic Pugilist would be a woman i would not dare piss off.

It's a graphic, realistic novel to say the least. Especially citing so much of New York's history. Very, very well written.

The way the preview was written, i actually thought it might be a "horror story".. I thought, that Lena Shanks was in lien with Der Golem, or some supernatural being to wreak revenge on the Stallworths.

It just basically showed that people who are poor, aren't as dumb/uneducated/non-resourceful as the rich would like them to be.

I liked the atmospherics of the book, but ultimately the story wore very thin. The nominally evil but perhaps justified persons wreaking havoc were unstoppable, and the elite but shallow and entitled family who were their intended victims were consistently unaware and foolish. I was ready for them all to be sent to their fate and the book to end.

Love the story and the writing is so wonderful. I had never heard of this author but a friend recommended. Gave me such a great description of New York in the 1880s. Actually became so interested that I went and researched the period and this book is very true to the actual. It's a revenge story. Do love a good revenge story and this fit the bill perfectly!

I've been getting into Michael McDowell's books lately (especially with the gorgeous new Valancourt covers,Yum!) And this story was absolutely phenomenal. It's a story of family drama and revenge worthy of a Greek play or a Roman royal family. In Gilded Needles, monsters come in all shapes and sizes.

I am so happy to have discovered this book and Michael McDowell. His writing is timeless and a treasure. This book had me from page one and I never wanted to put it down.
This is a story of revenge but it is also quite creepy! I'm a horror fan and I was suspect but this book has it all.
I'm now on to read more Michael McDowell!

Interesting version of a revenge tale that will keep you amused and entertained. Great characters and plot line. If you like early NY history this is also a bonus and you will identify with the history of the streets of NYC.
