I am reading this book after becoming a hospital chaplain. The role of a hospital chaplain is new to me, and this book did a great job in setting expectations in a clear and helpful manner. The author is right on in what to expect and how to minister. The opening chapter is a gem. That chapter alone is worth the price of this book. Get this book and read Holst's experience to make you a better hospital chaplain. I recommend Hospital Ministry - The Role of the Chaplain Today for both the new (for expectations and insights) and experience (as an affirmation) chaplains.

Chaplains often play a significant role in hospital ethics committees; in many instances, they helped to organize these committees in the late 1970s and 1980s. Hospital chaplaincy, like the hospital itself, had its origin in the ancient and medieval Christian church. These and other early innovators were convinced that not books but intensive clinical experience-learning to interpret the experience of real human beings, to read the "living human documents" through clinical encounters-held the key to developing a realistic and profound theological understanding of human nature and the art of effective pastoral care (Boisen).

Still In Mind
This is a standard in my mind for Hospital Chaplaincy work. It provided practical information with sensitivity toward the patient's and families' points of view in the often anxiety ridden hospital setting. The Chaplain stands as a non-judgmental figure representing the love of God and the reassurance that one is never alone when facing a "medical crisis".

Good
in waiting
I read this book years ago when I was going through Clinical Pastoral Education 'CPE'. I found it to be very useful then, and now almost ten years later, I am returning to it as a way to sharpen the saw. This book is an excellent book for anyone who is interested it getting a good glimpse of what hospital ministry is all about and a good way to prepare for that kind of ministry. I particularly like 'Chapter IX Students.' I highly recommend this book.
