Agreeing to represent the respected Judge R. Fiske Hamilton in a scandalous sexual harassment suit by his secretary, wisecracking lawyer Rita Morrone Hamilton is stunned when the trial turns deadly
3 stars because I was disappointed in the book, which was less good than others by the same author. The afterword explains it was her first hardback publication, so I guess this means one of her first published books.

I bought it because the sample whizzes along but the rest of the book doesn' t do so well. Two problems: the first is the amount of filler. A funeral takes place- five pages of non happening meditation. Pages and pages of dialogue with a dad. Pages more about dad's poker playing sessions and his friends. I skipped a lot of this without missing anything in the plot. Secondly we are asked to believe that an experienced and competent lawyer would steal crucial evidence from the crime scene, for no real reason, even when it could exonerate her client. She is a partner in a law firm but they won' t give her a lap top or a decent secretary. Her boyfriend's character is completely inconsistent. Her client insists on retaining her for a murder case even though she is not a criminal lawyer, -why?- and she agrees despite his being her long term boyfriend's father. She refuses to use her second chair, who actually knows criminal law very well. None of this makes good sense. A pity, and a waste of seven dollars....
I have read most of Ms Scottolini’s works and am sending her a plea to not produce another formulaic and ridiculously unbelievable story line as this one again. This must have been written in a hurry to satisfy some contractual obligation. Lisa, you are much better than this! The character stereotyping is out of hand. The constant asides expressed ad nauseam by the narrator should have never have gotten past your editor. Finally, the plan to catch the killer made absolutely no sense. Please, please, more books like the Vendetta Defense. My second star is only because the story moved along quickly and didn’t subject me to prolonged disappointment.
I enjoyed the story line, but what I really enjoyed was reading a book that had been well edited. Good sentence structure, no misspelled words, and good punctuation. To me this aids me in enjoying the story line. Love her style of writing. This was a fun book to read.
I enjoyed the story, it held my interest & hard to figure out who the bad guy was but quite different than what I've read from her before. The atty. was a little rough around the edges & not quite as instantly likable as previous heroines. Over all, tho, good read.
I can't really rate these Scottoline books because they were gifts for my husband to read on my Kindle. He likes her books and always enjoys them. I have not read her books.
I have read the entire Rosato series so I was expecting this book to almost be an extension of that series. While there are some theme similarities Rita is different from all the women of the Rosato series. Rita really moves the story in different ways than expected and of course, catches the bad guy in the end. You will have fun working out who the villain is.

written story. Totally waste of words. Story line was terrible same with writing. Someone else must have written this. Possibly a first time writer. Sorry I even started this book. Terrible.
Entertaining Scottoline. Her early novels were amusing and not as well developed as her later enterprises. Preferable to what she has been writing of late however. Good read for an evening in.
