I found this book to be very engrossing and interesting. The 100th Bomb Group of the USAAF has had a very storied existence! Mr, Crosby pulls you in and doesn't let you go as he recounts his experiences as a Navigator aboard a B-17 Flying Fortress during the Air War over Europe during WW!!. Fighting fear as he endures Flak (enemy anti-aircraft fire), enemy fighters, bad weather, frigid cold (sometimes 60 degrees below 0), keeping tight formations amidst as many as 1,000 other bombers, he nonetheless forged on. He tells the story with great feeling as he tells about many friends he lost in those hostile skies, and some humor as he recounts life in a USAAF air base in England and interacting with the local people he met on the farms and villages around the base. I highly recommend this book. I feel it gives an accurate view of the life of an Aircrew member during this historic time.

Harry Crosby is well known in the literature community. He taught for awhile as a professor at the University of Iowa; one if not the one top literary University in the USA. Don't believe me-look it up. He details his time serving in the infamous Bloody 100th Bomb Group in WWII. It is very well written & I highly recommend it.

My mother's brother was with the 350th Bomber Squadron which was part of the "Bloody 100th". His plane was shot down 24 May 1944 and he and the whole crew bailed and were captured. He was a POW for the duration at Stalag Luft IV in Eastern Germany
This book contributes to my project of writing a family history

This is a fine interesting and delightful book and provided a clear view of the stresses, horrors and life of air crews in B-17s during the Second World War. It also is occasionally humorous and very well written so as literature as well as history it is excellent. Harry taught English at Boston University and Harvard after the war. You will be interested to know that Harry Crosby is significantly represented in the New Smithsonian Institution Air and Space Museum's new permanent exhibition on Time and Navigation for his lead navigator's role over Europe.
