This first volume of what must be considered an essential historical document details Bismarck's early life, from the political views of his youth and his entrance into public life through his work in government ministries and his time at the Court of Munich. It is vital reading for any informed, in-depth understanding of modern European history. Bismarck is writing his memoirs for the scholar already familiar with 19th century diplomacy. He assumes the reader is familiar with second tier issues and foreign policy complexities. It is not a simple read but does reveal a diplomat with detailed knowledge of the European Chessboard and the challenges facing Prussia and later Germany in both domestic and foreign affairs.

The one line from this vol. 1 is his writing, "I'm not sure why..I am just superstitious of anything coming from Austria" I will never forget. If only his reasonings for things were more studied after his death... Buy, read, reflect.
