Billy Bob Thornton was raised in Arkansas amid a rich storytelling tradition. See, the South is just different than other places. You can feel the ghosts. These stories didn't have to be made up. Reading The Billy Bob Tapes: A Cave Full of Ghosts, you feel as if you’re sitting on a porch with Thornton, half-empty bottle on a small wooden table, Waylon Jennings wafting from the old-fashioned stereo in the living room, listening to his stories deep into the night. -Richard Roeper, The Chicago Sun-Times (full article below). Billy Bob Thornton on Twitter, tater tots and (ugh) Komodo dragons - Chicago Sun-Times.

Billy Bob – he was advised to use that name rather than plain Billy so that casting directors would remember him – is dyslexic .

But this is also a cave full of ghosts : tributes to people whom he has loved or been influenced by. Thornton’s voice is a powerful one, peppered with profanity and with just the right mix of humour and mania. Verdict 4/5. Virgin Books, £1. 9.

The Billy Bob Tapes book. Billy Bob didn’t sit down and write this book with his friend Kinky Friedman. Some might say that Billy Bob Thornton is another of these Hollywood actors having a go at being in a band, but it’s not like that at all. Instead, Billy’s friends gathered at his place night after night and were given the task of getting him to talk, to help bring back memories and get the words flowing. Billy Bob was interested in music long before he ever considered being an actor.

There is-and could only ever be-one Billy Bob Thornton: actor, musician, Academy Award-winning screenwriter, and accidental Hollywood badass. A Cave Full of Ghosts. Billy Bob Thornton, Kinky Friedman.

A Cave Full of Ghosts. by Kinky Friedman and Billy Bob Thornton.

In The Billy Bob Tapes, he leads us into his Cave Full of Ghosts, spinning colorful tales of his modest (to say the least) Southern upbringing, his bizarre phobias (komoda dragons?), his life, his loves (including his marriage to fellow Oscar winner Angelina Jolie), and, of course, his movie career. Best of all, he’s feeding these truly incredible stories and righteous philosophical rants through his close friend, Kinky Friedman-legendary country music star, bestselling author, would-be politician, and all-around bon vivant.

I bought The Billy Bob Tapes: A Cave Full of Ghosts as soon as I heard he had a book out. I have always liked him and his work and I feel he is as true as a person can be working in the entertainment biz these days. I grew up and still live in the deep South and I found myself nodding my head to some of the things he says and even laughing-out-loud for real! I wish I could someday meet him and just talk. I loved the part about the Snowdrift shortening, as I too grew up poor and we used that. This is a great read and I really enjoyed it. I think anyone who grew up in the South or without a middle-class family (ok I will say it, poor) will find tender moments in this work and you will love it. And those who didn't, well I think yall will love it too, becasue who couldn't love BBT?

This is a good book alone but if you like or love Billy Bob this book is a must read! Contains guest appearances as well! This book has stories from his childhood all the way to the present! I found all of them entertaining and as one of the blurbs on the cover states Billy Bob is a great, entertaining and masterful story teller! Great insights from the mind of another southern boy close to home with similar life experiences But even if we didn't share similar roots I would still love his childhood stories contained in this book!

This is the first celebrity autobiography I have read. I usually would not waste my time, but something intrigued me about Billy Bob Thornton. I liked the way he told his life story like he was sitting with you and talking to you. At times he broke my heart with his childhood memories and how he struggled to even eat when first starting to make a name for himself. I loved his honesty...his weirdness. At times he was a little "out there" for me, but you have to give him kudos for never giving up his dream. He seems like an average guy who likes the simplier, real life, not a phony. I really enjoyed this book.

It seems like you're just hanging out with Billy Bob. I've heard his voice so much, I could hear it in my head. I'd like more details about his life experience as a musician, and more about how he created and developed "Sling Blade" during his acting classes, for example. But it's not a complete or chronological biography, and I do think that would be a book I'd like to read. It was an interesting couple of evenings, "almost" hanging out with a guy I'd like to have a conversation with.

Listening to Billy Bob Thornton speak makes me feel like I have been transported back to my childhood that was spent in the Mississippi Delta and the hills of Arkansas. The cadence of his speech and the colloquialisms that he uses when he speaks - like those rainbow colored sprinkles they put on ice cream cones - are soothing and familiar to me. This book is written so that it feels like you are sitting beside him on his screened-in front porch at his childhood Arkansas home, drinking a sweaty cold glass of sweet tea, listening to him quietly, but with that mischievous little smile, tell the story of his youth, and how he came to be Billy Bob. And I feel that I am, at last, home again.

I am a fan of Billy Bob. Ever since my husband introduced me to "Sling Blade", I have looked for other movies he has done. So, of course, I wanted to read this book. Unlike some reviewers, I am not going to pan it by talking about how it could have been written better. The book is upfront in telling you that it wasn't written, it was transcribed from tapes. So it's more like listening to Billy Bob talk than anything else. And that's a good thing!

There were some parts that didn't keep my attention, but I can say that about almost all books I have read (and a LOT of conversations I have been party too). Overall, the book is interesting and gives a little bit of a peek into the man.

Wow, I cannot put this book down. I'm almost done with it. I will not pass this book on. I'll keep it with my guarded possessions. This guy not only is an amazing talent; he's REAL. So much of what he writes are such interesting experiences, yet similar to others - therefore, it brings back memories of a better time to me. Slingblade is one of my all time top movies. I love the movie A Simple Plan too. And Christmas is not Christmas without Bad Santa. I have a special place in my heart for Billy Bob Thornton. I was an owner (for one short year) of the 1967 Firebird in the Travit Tritt music video in which Billy Bob drove that Firebird. I guess that's as close as I'll get to Billy Bob, but this book is a close second. I wish more books were as straightforward and as well written as this one. :)
I was disappointed in this book. I thought Billy Bob's history would be interesting and I thought he was interesting from what I knew of him. It turns out he is not, at least in this book. If you want to know everything, everyone and every song ever sung in the 70's, then this book is for you. He spends a great deal of time justifying his reasons for why he did what he did throughout his life. Tedious.
