The scope of the series spans the entire Periodic Table and addresses structure and bonding issues associated with all of the elements. Physical and spectroscopic techniques used to determine, examine and model structures fall within the purview of Structure and Bonding to the extent that the focus is on the scientific results obtained and not on specialist information concerning the techniques themselves.

We will also discuss the structure and bonding of solid state materials. We will finish the course with a discussion of mechanistic chemistry, covering substitution, organometallic and electron transfer reactions.

Atomic structure and bonding. To understand bond formation, it is necessary to know the general features of the electronic structure of atoms-that is, the arrangement of electrons around the central nucleus. For background information about this subject and further details, see atom. Current understanding of atomic structure had to await the introduction of quantum mechanics by the scientists Werner Heisenberg of Germany and Erwin Schrödinger of Austria in the mid-1920s.
