He is best known to the British public for his appearances on television as an expert on robotics; including the BBC Two television series Robot Wars and Techno Games, and co-hosting Bright Sparks for BBC Northern Ireland. He is emeritus professor of artificial intelligence and robotics at the University of Sheffield.

One of the most important considerations in designing a model of spatial cognition involves finding a way to specify the meanings of the terms, such as left and front and so on, that the model is to interpret. Such a specification is difficult using the componential-based microfeature encoding that many connectionist systems employ.

Noel Sharkey PhD, DSc FIET, FBCS CITP FRIN FRSA is Professor of AI and Robotics and Professor of Public Engagement at the University of Sheffield and was an EPSRC Senior Media Fellow (2004-2010). He holds a Doctorate in Experimental Psychology and a Doctorate of Science.

Each of the eleven chapters in this volume discusses a different model of cognition ranging from image analysis through word recognition to communication failure in dialogue, and covers the spectrum of techniques from the purely symbolic to the purely connectionist.
