The authors mention Fine's Ideas Behind the Chess Openings in the intro. and it is apparent that they tried to write the book they thought Fine would write, if he were to focus just on the Sicilian. There is a great deal about pawn structures. The book is similar to the "Mastering the. opening series, such as the Bellin and Ponzetto books. An excellent, high quality work.

This book by Levy and O'Connell is a wonderful primer on the Sicilian defence, that is instructive as well as entertaining. The authors mention Fine's Ideas Behind the Chess Openings in the intro., and it is apparent that they tried to write the book they thought Fine would write, if he were to focus just on the Sicilian. There is a great deal about pawn structures. The book is similar to the "Mastering the ..." opening series, such as the Bellin and Ponzetto books. An excellent, high quality work. I would recommend getting the hardback copy.

The hardback edition of this book described in this Amazon.com listing, published in 2009 by Ishi Press, appears to be simply a reprint of the 1978 hardback edition published by David McKay Co. As such, both books are printed using the older, more difficult to read 'Descriptive' chess notation. From what I have been able to determine, the only edition of this book published using the newer, modern 'Algebraic' chess notation (much easier to read) is the 1987 paperback edition published by Collier Books, division of McMillan Publishing Co.. While currently (as this review is being written) Amazon does list a 1987 paperback edition (now out of print) for sale, there is no indication whether it is the Collier Books, algebraic edition (although I suspect it is).

These caveats notwithstanding, I have found this book to be very instructive in explaining the fundamental principles underlying the Sicilian Defense. In fact, this book is unique in that it is focused exclusively on elucidating the principles and techniques of the opening, in contrast to the more usual opening books which deal with specific variations and lines of play. For these reasons I can highly recommend (the algebraic version of) this book for anyone looking to understand How to Play the Sicilian Defense.
