Phillip Parker King was a Lt. in the British Navy. They ran into Malays who came to Australia to exploit the sea life. Lt King treated the Malays very carefully when they were out in force, as he was not sure if they might not be hostile. After the end of the Napoleanic wars in 1815, Lt. King was sent to Australia to investigate and document parts of the coast. He was sent with two midshipmen, and the rest of the crew he had to recruit in Australia. GIven the issues with getting water and supplies on the sparsely settled coast, at they went north to Dutch settlement were they got supplies.
King carried out the surveys in two successive ships, the Mermaid, which was declared unseaworthy in 1820, and the newly commissioned Bathurst. He worked on the charts, which were published by the Hydrographic Office, for two years after his return to England
