I won't ruin this book for you by describing it comprehensively. Suffice it to say that if you've ever doubted whether Chinese and Western cultures are different, read this book! Dr. Eisenberg was my classmate at Harvard during the 1970s and remained there to teach after graduating from Harvard Medical School. The other-worldly phenomena he describes in "Encounters with Qi" could not have been invented and are described lucidly with scientific precision as well as a refreshingly wide-eyed, youthful ebullience. (Eisenberg was only in his early twenties and still in medical school when he visited China.) Only the cultural and political details seem dated, nearly a quarter century after Tiananmen Square and the explosive growth in the manufacturing sector of the Chinese economy. Recommended to all medical people and anyone else just curious about Asia.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It goes into places I have never been intellectually and challenges many things I once assumed about the human body and medicine. Written by a Harvard MD who studied over there for some time, it has credibility, though at times it challenges credulity! A great read for holistic types who want to believe there is something better than drugs, cains and sleeping pills.

This is quite a book! I learned a great deal about Chinese culture as well as their approach to health and healing. The book is well written and presents a the history as well as the modern perspective on energy and how we must integrate it in order to maintain balance in our lives.
