John Harvey Kellogg wrote an extensive piece on concepts revolving around the topic of massage. In his work published in 1895 called The Art of Massage, he makes it a point to discuss the history of the field. Kellogg supported pushing the idea that massage can help stimulate muscles to prevent their degradation. Also, not one category was present where the number of muscles present in men was equal to the number in women.

I have now bought about 30 massage books. Kellogg's book came on a whim, no real purpose for the purchase. Then I started reading and realized that I happened upon a classic.
Many of his massage and anatomy claims use resources over 100 years past so they will prove obsolete because of our new knowledge and technological marvels. His knowledge, analysis, massage applications, and synthesis of the paths to pain reduction remain valid; if not scientifically proven to date.
This condensed, easy to read prose has a strongly structured presentation. I love it and its style. We don't write like this any more in technical writing, but I see that I will use Kellogg's style for clear and distinct presentations of complex material.
Buy this book for yourself and others to follow you.

So I have now bought 4 of Kellogg's The Art of Massage books for my personal use and as gifts to massage instructors.

Yeah... A bit challenging in this books format to read and study. Apart from that you get the basic information. Coloured pictures do help which this edition doesn't have, making it a bit challenging for study.

What a great book written by such an interesting man from the turn of the 20th century. I was often astounded that I was reading a book written so very long ago.

Have read quite a number of books on massage. Dr Kellogg has written the best. This is it.

I order the used one because the pricing on the new ones were out of sight luke $275.00 ea. The book has so many pen notations. Should not have ordered that book, but cannot afford the high priced one. So I am trying to ignore the writings. At least 3/4 of the books pages are written on. Even has the previous owners name inside cover. Very Sad.

Book was in very good condition and the price was much below my book stores price
Although some of his resources became eclipsed by more recent research into physiology and massage, overall, this massage book remains peerless. It's packed full of information and deserves a place on massage therapists' library shelves or Kindle. I really like the number systems that he uses for referring to his paragraph style of concept presentation. It's very nicely done.
