American studies in the scholarly sense are old in Europe. Sigmund Skard, born in 1903, was educated a the Sorbonne and Oslo, where he taught comparative literature from 1933 to 1938. In the following year the Institute started a series of book publications in cooperation with the University of Pennsylvania. This is the second of two volumes titled Americana Norvegica. In 1941-45 he was in American government service in Washington, . after which he took up the position of Professor of American Literature at the University of Oslo.
His book American Studies in Europe: Their History and Present .
His book American Studies in Europe: Their History and Present Organization (1958) was an early mapping of the American Studies movement in Europe. In 1949 he had published his book American Problems, which indicated a critical perspective on American culture. Among his several dozen books should be mentioned The USA in Norwegian History (1976). 13Dorothy Burton Skårdal’s contribution to the field of America Studies should be underlined in particular. Dr. Øverland has also been a dedicated servant to the EAAS, as a member of the EAAS board, 1976-1981 and Treasurer 1992-1996.
