HMS Africa attacked the head of the Allied line (to the North of the Weather column), whilst the rest of the ships-of-the-line were divided into two columns, with the Weather column forming the northern flank and the Lee column the southern flank. During the battle the frigates and smaller vessels acted in support, but did not engage the enemy.
