Deborah Challinor has a PhD in history and is the author of thirteen bestselling novels, including the Children of War series, the Convict Girls series, the Smuggler's Wife series and the Restless Years series. She has also written one young adult novel and two non-fiction books.

Book three in the best-selling Smuggler's Wife series by one of our leading historical novelists. Kitty Farrell, headstrong and passionate as ever, is heartbroken over the apparent death by drowning of her husband Rian. Alone and grieving on the goldfields of Ballarat she turns to Rian's long-time shipmate Daniel, who has loved her from afar for many years. The consequences will be disastrous and challenge every character in this brilliant third instalment in Deborah Challinor's extraordinary Smuggler's Wife series

Primarily known for her historical novels, Deborah Challinor’s first published books were non-fiction history books, including the best-selling Grey Ghosts: New Zealand Vietnam Vets Talk About Their War (Hodder Moa Beckett, 1998). Born in Huntly, she holds a PhD in New Zealand history from the University of Waikato. Challinor has worked as a fulltime writer and historian since 2000.

On the gold fields of the colonies, enemies are easily made. In the confines of a ship, they can turn deadly.

When Kitty Farrell is offered a trinket by a street urchin, her impulsive response will change both of their lives forever, and place an unexpected strain on her marriage. For the past four years, she has sailed the high seas on the trading vessel Katipo with Rian, her wild Irish adventurer, but when they return to the Bay of Islands in 1845, they find themselves in the midst of a bloody affray. On the gold fields of the colonies, enemies are easily made.

This is Deborah Challinor's Books page. I was 8 and wearing my best outfit: cream polo neck jumper, orange and brown checked miniskirt with gold chains across the pocket flaps, cream fishnet tights, and brown patent leather slingbacks with the interchangeable colours you could put in the toe bits (orange that day). I looked hot! My mother, my sister and I were on the bus from Auckland city to Takapuna to visit my Aunt. I'd had a spearmint milkshake at lunch, which turned out to be a mistake as I barfed everywhere, including on myself.

On the goldfields of Ballarat vows are broken - can a wounded heart ever forgive? When the Yarrowee River bursts its banks, Rian Farrell, a dashing Irish sea captain and part-time gunrunner, disappears in the torrential flood. Believing herself a widow, the headstrong and passionate Kitty Farrells heart is left in tatters after the sudden death of her beloved husband. In her grief, she finally succumbs to the attractions of his long-time shipmate, Daniel, who has loved her from afar for many years. The consequences are disastrous, and will challenge Kitty Farrell both physically and mentally. The resulting novel is a heady mix of powerful relationships and memorable, passionate characters, whose compelling story plays out against a skilfully depicted and utterly realistic backdrop of Old Ballarat. An accomplished novelist and professional historian, experienced author Deborah Challinor brings her extensive skills as a bestselling author of historical romance to bear in creating a story that will resonate in your heart for a very long time.

Your books never come fast enough for me.
I totally love historic fiction.
Your books are riveting and once I start reading them I find it difficult to put them down to do other things. I am always disappointed when I come to the end because I just want the story to go on. Keep on writing and I will keep on reading. Thank you for the privilege of being able to read what you write.

Loved this book. It is the third in the series and as good as the other two. Wish there was more in this series as it was so good. Deborah Challinor is a great author and describes early NZ and Australia very well
great ant
Like all of Deborah Challinor's books, this is a great story. Had me glued from the first page. Deborah rights wonderful stories about people based in either New Zealand or Australia (OZ) or both. Many are historical stories based on fact. Don't hesitate, read any of her books, you won't be disappointed.

Band of Gold is the final book (I would read more) in this series of Kitty , Amber , then Band of Gold. Band of Gold is set in the gold fields in Ballerat, Australia. Your interest is kept going by so much. You get caught up in the characters, the land and gold mining and the history.

Another in the series of books by this author. Enjoyable yet full of historical value of colonial life during New Zealands birth as a commonwealth country.
