After graduating from the University of Toronto, he studied theology at Emmanuel College for several years and actually worked as a pastor before deciding he preferred the academic life. These include Fables of Identity: Studies in Poetic Mythology, The Well-Tempered Critic, and The Great Code: The Bible and Literature.
The Stubborn Structure: Essays on Criticism and Society. The Bush Garden: Essays on the Canadian Imagination. The Critical Path: An Essay on the Social Context of Literary Criticism. From 1950 to 1960 he wrote the annual critical and bibliographical survey of Canadian poetry for Letters in Canada, University of Toronto Quarterly.
