I first got my hands on Forget-Me-Not at the public library as a child. I was vaguely aware of Victorian flower language from an early age due to my Victorian/Edwardian-raised grandmother, and it's something hard to escape in the city of Victoria proper. The three predominant pastimes in Victoria are gardening, lawn bowling, and golf.

Forget-Me-Not contains bursts of appealing, luminous paintings surrounded by snippets of text. I became fascinated by the rich details that were interspersed with famous poems and little-known facts. Flowers are an essential treasury of cultural understanding. We ascribe values and meanings through plants, and it's no surprise that red roses are beloved of couples or yews are associated with death. What languages are employed through tactics developed from poetry, literature, and paintings? I hadn't an idea until I delved into the depths of this book. Walking into a florist will never be the same again.

After I read this book, I spent the next several weeks perusing through page after page. It engrossed me, and I designed bouquets for my mother and female relatives' birthdays or Mother's Day with hidden, simplistic messages. I loved it, everyone loved it. I must have renewed the book fifteen times but I never found a place to purchase it.

Flash forward fifteen years and on a lark, I searched to find the name and the author without luck. A chance brush with the catalog got me the ISBN and I had this book on its way to my mailbox within an hour thanks to Amazon. The details haven't changed in the least, and I've combined my passion for writing historical fiction with Victoriana thanks to this little gem.

Forget-Me-Not does all that a book like this should, using attractive paintings with a Victorian mores coupled with tidy, neat entries. It explains how flower language depends on the relationships between flowers and cultural "footnotes." If you love plants or sentimental hints, I highly suggest this as a choice for you.
