Home Eleanor H. Porter Just David. After that David did not question any more. He was too amazed, toodistressed. From beneath his bunk he draggeda large, dusty traveling-bag, and in this he stowed a little food, afew garments, and a great deal of the music scattered about the room. David, in the doorway, stared in dazed wonder. Gradually into his eyescrept a look never seen there before. Father, where are we going?" he asked at last in a shaking voice, ashe came slowly into the room.

Nothing personal
Eleanor H. Porter's novel Just David is a sweet story of a gifted orphan boy left alone at age six by the death of his father. He finds himself in the care of a farmer and his wife. David doesn't even know his last name. He knows only his love for his father and the beautiful things his father taught him. As David goes about the village playing his violin and telling of the things he knows and bettering the lives of so many, the village wonders who David is and where he came from. The book also tells a love story.
In my opinion, our society would be well-served if children's and young adult literature returned to the themes presented in Just David. I highly recommend this book.
A book that presents beauty in relationships as the important pursuit in life vs the worlds view of success as hard work and accumulating material 'stuff'. David's belief in his fathers words and values strengthens him for the adaptation to the new world in the village. E Porter deals with life's raw emotions and our heart's deepest needs.
It was read to a class of children after their lunch break in 1948 in a small country school by a teacher whose husband was suffering from cancer and she read and cried and we cried with her. Just David helped her through her sorrow.
I read that this book was a children's book but I have to tell you that there are many books written for adults that don't have the heart and soul of this story,I will not ruin your expectations by telling you about the plot so just please order this book and open your heart to things that you did not know about your self.
I read this book when I was a child. I enjoyed it then and I enjoyed it now. I had a little trouble with some of the grammar but it doesn't take away from the story. It's nice to see how one little boy can change a whole village.
Just David is a book that can only be described as Just Remarkable! I am so sorry it took me so long to discover it. It is a jewel. I was moved by this boy and his gloriously simple view of the world, his ability to see the beautiful in everything and his search for his purpose in life. It is a timeless story that should be required reading in high school. It is a lesson that is desperately needed in this world of materialism and ever evolving technology. This story will be read and read again and I plan on purchasing some copies for like minded friends that I know will enjoy this book as much as I did.

It is a story of the human experience, a story of one little boy who changed his world and made it a more beautiful place.
Woven against the tapestry of people caught in their everyday lives, not seeing the beauty around them. Definently worth reading!
Very inspiring short story. Great for young people and old people. Shows the brighter side of life and having a positive attitude makes life so much easier.
