Counter Poised will keep you riveted to the book right up until the surprise ending when you'll throw it into the air with glee! But it's not just a thriller; it's also a thinking-person's book. In the course of the story, the characters discuss or face dozens of real-world political, social, economic, and military issues. The world is not a simple place, and Spikenard's characters reflect this fact. I was on the edge of my seat, fully captivated by the suspense.

A strong shot of caffeine should give me some energy, he thought nto a thick, dark, concentrated sludge. Strong enough to strip pain. aybe I should take that last cup-might be just what I nee. hese early mornings are killing me! Quickly deciding against it, George poured out the sludge and made a fresh pot. Not chicory coffee, but it’ll do in a pinch! Passing Lannis’s office on the way back, George heard Lannis and Buffalo.

Disturbing, interesting, amazing, exciting, and above all, thought-provoking. An action novel that deals with some of the most critical real-world issues we face today, including radical Islam.

HMCS Spikenard was a Flower-class corvette that served with the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. She served primarily in the Battle of the Atlantic as a convoy escort. She was named for the Spikenard flower. Flower-class corvettes like Spikenard serving with the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War were different from earlier and more traditional sail-driven corvettes.

About book: Lannis continued, following George’s departure. It is a minority fundamentalist religious cult, distinct from mainstream Islam, but growing. Islamic scholars say Islam teaches one to be lenient toward others and to understand their value systems.

Disturbing, interesting, amazing, exciting, and above all, thought-provoking. An action novel that deals with some of the most critical real-world issues we face today, including radical Islam. Radical Islamic terrorists are determined to acquire and use nuclear weapons against the West. The only thing standing in their way is our ability to stop them. There's no downside for them because we can't strike back in a similar fashion. The Cold War rules have changed-our massive nuclear arsenal of strategic bombers, missiles, and ballistic missile submarines is useless against terrorists who strike and hide. But can we deter them? That is, can we threaten retaliation so costly to them that they don't even attempt to use nuclear weapons? One man thinks so. In this exciting story of intrigue, imaginative new technology, and under-water battle scenes, George Adams attempts to implement his solution to radical Islam and nuclear terrorism. But will it work? You be the judge.

Thought it was a good read ... halfway though the, the plot changed from how I thought is was going to go. I couldn't put it down till I finished itin an afternoon.
The solutions put forward by the author I thought hit the nail right on the head.
Risky Strong Dromedary
Spikenard's first novel and I believe you will agree with me that this is a very good first novel. The story starts with a bang, literally. I don't think I'm giving anything away when I say that a terrorist threatens Washington, DC with a nuclear weapon (see the book cover!)The philosophy I allude to in the title of this review is explained along the way as the characters are fleshed out. All very logical and reasonable.
The protagonist, George Adams has some demons that he needs to put to rest and that begins to happen midway through the story. The story begins at COMSUBLANT headquarters where George is riding a desk hoping to get a command, once again, of a "boomer" nuclear sub. George has plans for the sub, and its deadly "sherwood forest" of missles, that nobody suspects. A boomer is a submarine that carries and launches nuclear ballistic missles. The sub is capable of playing hide and seek beneath the world's oceans for months without surfacing - nobody knows where it is. You get an education regarding our underwater fleet and some new technology that really makes the boomer more than a ballistic missle launch pad.
George and the crew goes renegade and they are tracked and chased by his best friend. The chase roams the Atlantic, the Pacific and includes run-ins with the Saudi secret service, drug runners, Chinese and Iranian navies. There is no shortage of action. You will like this book.

Not only was this a very good read, but it also made some very interesting point about the Islam culture. Makes you stop and think about why things are the way they are.

this was really a nice read. The technologies referred to must be either extant or amazingly well thought out as they are described in exquisite detail and seem pretty reasonable. Of course, you should temper this statement with the understanding that I also am able to suspend disbelief for sci-fi novels. The writing successfully maintains a level of tension that I rarely see in relatively new authors. Overall, I highly recommend this novel. It will not disappoint.
