A fascinating novel that reworks elements of Shakespeare's The Tempest  .

In Mama Day, Gloria Naylor has created a work that is at once a contemporary love story, a timeless generational saga, a chillingly believable tale of the supernatural, and a homage to the redemptive power of African-American tradition. It is a novel that spans two worlds. One is the southern barrier island of Willow Springs, inhabited solely by the descendants of slaves, a place exempt from the laws of nature and the often racist laws of man.

Gloria Naylor (January 25, 1950 – September 28, 2016) was an American novelist, known for novels including The Women of Brewster Place (1982), Linden Hills (1985) and Mama Day (1988). Naylor was born in New York on January 25, 1950, the oldest child of Roosevelt Naylor and Alberta McAlpin.

On the island of Willow Springs, off the Georgia coast, the powers of healer Mama Day are tested by her great niece, Cocoa, a stubbornly emancipated woman endangered by the island's darker forces. A powerful generational saga at once tender and suspenseful, overflowing with magic and common sense.

Words can't adequately convey how phenomenal this book is. It spoke to an idea outside itself-which, in my opinion, makes a story remarkable

Takes a lot of brain power.. You really have to pay attention to keep up. I loved it once I paid complete attention..a lot of stories going on at one time !!!

This book took me into lives I could have never imagined. Into a place both real and surreal. Oh to have such grand folks to raise me!
You have to meet Ophelia, George, Mama Day and Abigail. You will remember them forever.
Flash_back
This story is slow and languid like the heat and humidity of summer. The reader is transported to Willow Springs, a boundary island outside of time and reality as we know it. Love and loss figure prominently and the beauty of nature is part of the story. A languid summer read.

My first time reading Naylor's work. Not a fan of this book. I dont like voodoo and spirits and such. I did finish the book. I made myself finish it since I bought it. I was waiting for the book to draw me in but it never did. There were really no high points in the book.

Having grown up in the South, this is one of my favorite books ever. It reminds me of growing up on dirt roads and believing several of the superstitions in the book. Literally, if this was a movie, it could be recorded at my grandfather's house.

Needed a new copy after lending it out. Great writer who was under appreciated.
RIP Gloria Naylor
