K-PAX is an American science fiction novel by Gene Brewer, the first in the K-PAX series. The series deals with the experiences on Earth of a man named Prot (rhymes with "wrote").

K-PAX is an American science fiction novel by Gene Brewer, the first in the K-PAX series. It is written in the first person from the point of view of Prot's psychiatrist. K-PAX was adapted into a theatrical film of the same name, released in 2001. K-PAX II: On a Beam of Light (2001). K-PAX III: Worlds of Prot (2002). K-PAX IV: A New Visitor from the Constellation Lyra (2007).

K-PAX is a 2001 American-German science fiction-mystery film based on Gene Brewer's 1995 novel of the same name, directed by Iain Softley, starring Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges, Mary McCormack, and Alfre Woodard. The film is about a psychiatric patient who claims to be an alien from the planet K-PAX. During his treatment, the patient demonstrates an outlook on life that ultimately proves inspirational for his fellow patients and especially for his psychiatrist.

But he never twitched a muscle. I'm going to ask you to think about it for a while. We'll talk about this again a week from today, all right? Please trust m. No response ask to speak with. No response ask to speak with your friend no. In a twinkling prot was back, wide-eyed and smiling broadly. Long time no see. How ya been?".

Unlike the first book (and the second to an extent), this one completely ignores any of the interesting and realistic psychological aspects of patients at MPI that were before present. K-PAX I recommend without question, but K-PAX III: The Worlds of Prot does not live up to its predecessors' standards. 3 people found this helpful.

I have watched the movie K-PAX an average of once a year since I first saw it a year or two after its release. I love the ending that is (to me at least) open for interpretation, the scenes that are reminiscent of the life of Christ, the way the director plays with light, and the scattered spaceship imagery, as well as the actual writing and acting. I finally bought the digital book this week and was not disappointed. Although it lacks the cinematography and soundtrack, the writing of this original version is great, the story feels familiar while bringing in more detail than the movie, and I'm eager to read the next book in the series. If you are a fellow fan of the movie, I can almost guarantee you'll be a fan of the book too!

Much better than the movie. Very novel approach to scifi. You can tell that the author himself is a psychologist.
Delirium
The last in the three part series featuring prot (that's how he spells it), a part of the personality of one Robert Porter, who, as a result of an abusive childhood has developed three personalities.

But is prot merely part of Robert and his multiple personality disorder, or is he the real thing, that is, from KPAX, where everything is idyllic and void of any semblance to the life Robert lived, particularly the bad parts.

Without spilling the beans, those who find the movie KPAX intriguing and, as I do, find a fascination with mental illnesses and the mystery that surrounds those unfortunate victims, will want to purchase the entire trilogy, "KPAX", "On A Beam Of Light" and "KPAX III". None of the books are very long but they do present some interesting takes on humans and how we behave, be it politics, religion, etc.

Gene Brewer crafts an interesting tale and doesn't drown the reader in psychiatric technicalities, yet opens the door into a compelling world where medicine is in the Stone Age, treatment wise. There is the addition of obvious fiction (you'll know it when you read it) but all in all, it's a very enjoyable read.

My husband has schitzophrenia - lucky for us the bad days of locking people up and drugging them into chemical lobotomies seems to be over. He works in mental health and is completing his doctoral thesis. One of the books he keeps going back to again and againis K-Pax. He say it reminds him that though there are things and symptoms that can be treated there is also another side that sometimes has no explanation other than the incredible. People need the 'what if' to help them with the 'what they must do'.

Such a great story that keeps you wondering. Great characters to get attached to. Love this book and the questions it raises about humanity

I fully enjoyed the movie, but the book didn't really grab me. The supporting characters were not fully developed and they had plain Jane names; I found it difficult to keep track of them. The story was original, but if you've seen the film, there are few surprises.

I found a used copy of this little gem years ago at a Half-Priced Books store in Texas. I lost it and wanted to re-read it so i grabbed a copy off of Amazon. It is a great and original story, and as usual it eclipsed the movie that was based on it. However, i liked it better when I thought it was a true story. And now I find that there are 2 follow-up novels? I WANT!
Love this trilogy. Book was delivered much faster than expected.
