Joseph Miller and Mike Samson are closing in on one of the Fallen on the busy streets of New York City, with the help of a young woman who just happens to grow fur and fangs. Little do they know someone from Miller's past is hunting them to settle a grudge over a thousand years old.

Written by Matthew Bryan Laube, narrated by B. J. Harrison. It is the second book in the Ancient series, which follows the adventures of eccentric demon hunter Joseph Miller. His job is to defend the human race against seven mythical demons and their offspring. Unfortunately for us, he has been dead for the last 100 years. The series begins with Ancient Awakening, continues here with Ancient Enemies, and concludes with Ancient Revelations. Also listen to the first book, Ancient Awakening. I laughed, I cried, I peed a little.

I read Ancient Enemies immediately following Ancient Awakening and was very happy with the book. Laube continues his development of the demons which appear on earth at long, irregular intervals and the demon hunter whose job it is to protect humanity from the demons when they awaken. Caught up in the events are Ann, who finds herself in a unique situation with regard to the awakening demons, a local cop who has stumbled into the escalating horrific events and others caught on one side of the fight or the other. In this book, Laube gives us more details as to what the demons are and more on why they are awakening at this particular point in time, all while keeping us turning the pages as the action continues. The mystery surrounding the people who are somehow involved in the reappearance of the demons continues to be intriguing, making us want to read and discover more, rather than being a distracting subplot. Laube mixes in the various competing factions, as well as the seven demons who are coming on the scene, all while keeping us grounded with our main character, Ann, and what she is going through. Her humanity and realistic reactions to what she encounters makes this story more than just another supernatural thriller or horror story. Laube creates in Ann a character with whom we can sympathize and to whom we can relate. He again mixes just the right amount of humorous situations into the story to give a bit of relief from the ongoing terror that the characters face and the supernatural situations with which they must deal. The interactions between the characters, the demons and the mysterious factions who are interested or even complicit in these developments are all well written and, as in the first book, give us hints of what is to come without giving away the whole story. Laube again gives us a fast moving, scary story that leaves us wanting more. As it has all the elements I want in a good horror story and more, it definitely deserves all five stars.

If you liked the first book in this series, you will like this one as well. In fact, you really need to read that first book to understand what is going on in this one. I was not happy with the ending of this book, though, because unlike the first one, it ends before anything is resolved. There is this big buildup and then it ends right before the climax. It leaves you feeling like you quit reading the book without finishing it. I like books in a series that leave a few unanswered questions, but this one really didn't seem to get anywhere. It's still a great read, but I strongly recommend that you hold off reading it until the third book is out. I sure wish I had!

Good read for the price. It is a good sequel but needs a lot more rounding out of the characters. Getting there just not very quickly. Also, you have the "eternal hunter" that is a professional on all the Fallen, why is he always getting jacked up all the time from any minion all the time? This character needs to be less of the "wounded warrior" that is working through a injury and simply start kicking these fallen and the minions around. Also if he is not familiar with the weapons of the time get him what he is used to. I am sure in the big city somewhere you can find a battle ax or a sword that he can use.....

This book is worth a lot more than I paid for it. Laube is a good writer, creating consistent and believable characters, a plot line that keeps moving and keeps you up a lot later than you planned because you just want to read a little bit more. I've read all three of them and I'm hooked on this writer. I almost felt guilty paying so little for such good entertainment. I won't hesitate at all to continue buying if he chooses to raise his prices.

This was a better than average story with about every type of supernatural creature that you can imagine.Without going into a lot of details, suffice it to say that if you like vampires, werewolves, demons and other creatures, then this one is for you. There is a high body count and on both sides as well plenty of blood and guts.Check it out.

This is great. I have the first book signed, I bought it from the man himself. The books are very consuming, references to culture fabs is great. The books are not a hard read. This is a true monster book, no glittering vampires here. I highly recommend this book.
You must read the books in the correct series to follow the story. I enjoyed the first book and then got the second and then the third. See there is to be another one but not out yet. But you like a good versus bad book of demons and humans this is the series for you.
