I've read and re-read this book since I got it from a book club in about 1974 or '75. I only loaned it to a couple of people before I finally tracked down a second copy in a junk store.

But it doesn't matter in. the least that A Cry of Angels is leisurely abuilding, Mr. Fields is so slick at constructing scenes that his characters are pleasant company even when they seem to be doing nothing. The Southern rural atmosphere is so palpable that we can feel cool dust between our toes, warm sunlight on our shoulders, and endless summer days stretching beyond the horizon.
