In a drunken tear, he abruptly announced, "Hell, I know what she wants is a plain old ordinary house, so by God, why don't I just build her a plain old ordinary house!

Jeff Fields nchero models, a Tara, a Magnolia Manor?". He ripped through the drawings and magazine clippings piled on his office desk. All right, I'll build her the ordinariest house-what do I care? She's the one got to live in it, right? Ain't that what the salesmen say? I'll build such a box it'll get the Smithbilt Silver Medallion!"

Over time, I've purchased a number of copies of Angels from the bookshelves of antique stores and flea markets. They've all had the same appearance-well handled, a little tattered, passages pencil-marked, pages dog-eared-and I know they've been read with passion.

Jeff Fields' characters are as richly developed as an. .I only wish I could meet Earl. I encourage everyone to read this book, especially if you like Southern Lit. By the way, can anyone tell me what happened to Jeff Fields, or if he has written anything else? One of the top five books I've read. Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 21 years ago. I've read and re-read this book since I got it from a book club in about 1974 or '75. I only loaned it to a couple of people before I finally tracked down a second copy in a junk store.

But it doesn't matter in. the least that A Cry of Angels is leisurely abuilding, Mr. Fields is so slick at constructing scenes that his characters are pleasant company even when they seem to be doing nothing. The Southern rural atmosphere is so palpable that we can feel cool dust between our toes, warm sunlight on our shoulders, and endless summer days stretching beyond the horizon.

This book stands beside other titles like "Cold Sassy Tree", "To Kill A Mockingbird", "The Grass Harp", and a lesser known gem called "The Untidy Pilgrim". Fields is truly a gifted writer and it is a tragedy that he has not written more. Every scene that he paints in this book comes to life in vivid detail. The old country store, the boarding house, the quarry, the river (one of the funnier scenes is attached to this locale), the slum, and many more places. The characters really come alive, too.
I own a hardcover first edition of this book and a paperback. I treasure them both. Please, do your self a favor, and read this book. You probably can find a copy at the library...but I know you will end up buying a copy.

I discovered this book in high school back in the '70's and have reread it many times over the years. It is funny, moving, beautifully written, I believe the best American novel I've ever read. I was so enamored, I wrote the author, asking him tips on how to be a writer. He wrote me back a few fierce letters, passionate about his work and writing and writers. I actually had the guts to send him a piece of my own work, which he agreed to read. He savaged it, and that was devastating, but, over time, I found his advice to be 100% correct: be brave; dig deep into yourself and learn to listen to the writer who you are. What I've found baffling over these many years since the book was published (in 1974), was that this fine writer, a protege of the the wonderful writer Betty Smith ("A Tree Grows In Brooklyn) has never written a second book. What a terrible loss for us all.

It's been a couple of decades since I first met Em JoJohn, Jayell, Earl and all of their folks. I've read literally thousands of books in the last half century but this one is STILL in the top ten. Fields is a master!

A superb story that anyone over the age of fifteen can relate. It is filled with well developed characters that grab hold of you and refuse to let go. Never will you forget Em Joe John after his bouts with alcohol and his exploits keeping Earl safe. It is a perfect setup for a sequel and I hope I live long enough to read one.

This is an excellent novel. An easy but beautiful read. I purchased it used but it arrived in excellent condition so I’m happy I didn’t pay full price for a new book.
