Disheveled, disoriented, and ill, Greg Lukas didn't look like much of a pilot. But the Michaelsons, a family of interstellar traders, had to hire another crew member or lose the ship that was their livelihood. So they took Lukas on temporarily, assuming that he was a good pilot with a bad attitude. But Lukas's problem was much deeper: as a pilot in the Space Corps, he had stumbled upon a secret a powerful Corps faction would do anything to hide. His mind had been invaded and his memories rewritten, but the process had damaged him, perhaps beyond repair. Now he was tortured to the edge of endurance by the return of memories meant to be blocked forever. Lukas was falling apart -- and his rediscovered knowledge had put him in danger once again. When the Michaelsons learned who Lukas really was, they were willing to protect him -- but they were no match for his enemies. Unless help came from a surprising direction . . .

Kiley, a female spaceship captain of a family merchant ship takes a chance on Greg Lukas, a down-on-his-luck pilot with a secret, haunted past he can't remember. I love how the author makes us care about not just the two main characters, driven Kiley and haunted Greg, but also about her gentle, supportive brother and his friendly wife, her bitter sister and her quiet, reliable husband, all set in a well-crafted futuristic world of spaceship merchants just trying to stay in the black...

Greg turns out to be an excellent pilot, willing worker and sympathetic friend. The family grows to love and trust him, so much so that they don't throw him out after it turns out he's been convicted of the death of a man under his command, a death he can't remember. It's eating him up inside.

His best friend from command school, now a psychologist/interrogator, wants to help him remember, because he doesn't believe his friend was guilty. With Kiley's love and the family's support, Greg is hynotized and must relive his terrifying experience all over again...

In a fascinating parallel story arc, we see through the eyes of the captain of a damaged alien ship, who is searching for the way home. The aliens' ships are run by a being made of pure energy, devastatingly hurt and looking for a mental companion to connect it to the physical world.

An excellent book for anyone interested in psychology!

The sequel, Minds Apart, deals more with the aliens and their unique family units.
