Thus Spake David E.: The Collected Wit and Wisdom of the Most Influential Automotive Journalist of Our Time (Car and Driver Automobile Magazine) e-book

by David E. Davis

Thus Spake David E. book .

Thus Spake David E. The late David E. Davis Jr. was one of my childhood heroes; he is still something of a role model for me, both for his writing and his approach to life generally. I used to see him occasionally during the late 1980s & early 1990s, as he walked into or out of the 'Automobile' magazine office on East Liberty Street in downtown Ann Arbor. That sucks, but at least ‘Automobile’, unlike most of the music magazines, is still being published; the bookmark I used while reading this book was one of the current subscription cards, and I’ve been thinking about subscribing once again.

His collected writings were published in 1999 "Thus Spake David . The Collected Wit and Wisdom of the Most Influential Automotive Journalist of Our Time". Davis said his success in automotive journalism came from "his ability to marry southern storytelling to big-city presentation. The Truth About Cars said "automotive journalism in the post-Vietnam-War era was entirely and singlehandedly defined by David E. Davis, J. Time magazine called Davis the "dean of automotive journalists. I suddenly understood with great clarity that nothing in life - except death itself - was ever going to kill me. No meeting could ever go that badly.

Posts about David E. Davis. Automotive writer Todd Lassa called him "a raconteur, an impresario, a bon vivant in a tweed, three-piece suit. The Collected Wit and Wisdom of the Most Influential Automotive Journalist of Our Time"

He was 80. The cause was complications of surgery for bladder cancer, his wife, Jeanne, said.

by David E. Davis, Jr. Cogito, ergo zoom . This anthology is by the late and rather wonderful David E. Davis J. the doyen of US car journalism. It contains over a hundred articles Davis wrote for Car and Driver and The Automobile magazines between 1962 and 1999. Davis was a formidably able journalist whose enthusiasm for fast cars, fast women, and good wine lights up this collection, and it is complemented by his trenchant opinions on just about every other subject which creeps into his prose.

Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 19 years ago. One of the things I opened Christmas morning is one of the best gifts I could have gotten in a long time. Thus Spake David E reminded me of why i thought so highly of Davis as an automotive writer and why, when he steps down from writing altogether, the world will be a darker place. Imagine him sitting down with you and relating each adventure in his automotive life personally and you get an idea of why so many car-oriented people like him. as much as they do.

Essays from "Car & Driver" and "Automobile magazine" share the author's driving experiences, evaluations of cars, and insights into the automobile industry

Funny how many of DED’s columns I remember reading from the ‘70’s which should be some indication of the quality and staying power of his commentary. Both the publishing world and the quality of the magazines Davis left behind have changed, not always for the better which is really a testament not just for his ability with the written word but how he could lead and inspire contributors to those publications to step up to his level of excellence and Collect such a high quality level of riders that are necessarily car guys but simply express ideas brightly, a rare ability and seemingly Impossible to duplicate these days.

Imagine him sitting down with you and relating each adventure in his automotive life personally and you get an idea of why so many car-oriented people like him as much as they do. That he brings a certain amount of ego along with him will put some off, but he has, after all, been able to do things most of us only dream about doing. After I finished it, I went back and read some of his columns from back issues of Automobile Magazine and enjoyed them even more than the first time around.
If you're familiar with Davis' work and don't have Thus Spake yet, buy it; you won't be disappointed. He speaks with the same authority issue after issue and year after year and does it with a way that sparkles. He, in fact, does not call himself an automotive journalist, but rather an automotive storyteller - along with an actyor playing himself.
Those who like cars but don't know him are highly recommended to buy the book as well. You'll make a new friend.

Mr. Davis became a monthly staple of mine beginning at age 9, and I've spent the succeeding two decades endeavoring to craft a life that lives up to his rather lofty aesthetic standards. A great book for those evenings when you have a hankering for something to "knock your hat in the creek" but there's too much snow outside to take a drive in the 2002.
Hear this: "Thus Spake David E." is not about cars -- it's about people, life, and the art of living. Dare I say it, DED is the Fangio of the typewriter, and we're all better for it. Where else would you find the advice, "Get rich. Get rich, then you can sleep till noon and screw 'em all". Words to live by, indeed.

I've been a fan of David E. since the sixties. This book is a powerful and entertianing collection of his best columns, with lessons about life and social issues blended-in. The tales that he tells are ones that can never hope to be experienced again: legends like Shelby and Fangio, travels to Argentina, Germany and Japan, all flavored with the wit and charm that only David E. can provide. Worth every penny!

Fabulous writing as expected - I regret not discovering DED a couple of decades earlier, when I could have written back to him. If only there were more photographs to prove his unbelieveable adventures, that would be perfect!

For car enthusiasts who want to better understand car culture over the 60's, 70's and 80's as written by the absolutely most interesting and established automotive journalist of our time.
I was looking for writing from a different era.
