This paper analyses the recent evolution of China’s imbalances, the risks they pose to the economic outlook and the potential impact of a transition to sustainable growth in China on the global and euro area economies. Furthermore, the source of the shock clearly matters: a reform-driven growth slowdown could bring about positive confidence effects by removing a tail risk to the global economy, mitigating some of the negative effects of a weaker.
